The internet loves to blame stubborn bloating on parasites. Usually it's something far more common. But "usually" isn't "always" — so here's how to think about persistent bloating, and the clues that a parasite is actually worth checking.
A parasite like Giardia can cause bloating and gas — but it usually comes with company and a story:
Bloating alongside greasy, foul-smelling, or floating stools and diarrhea
Symptoms that started after untreated water (lakes, streams, wells) or travel abroad
A pattern that lingers for weeks or keeps relapsing rather than tracking with what you eat
Interestingly, a parasite infection can sometimes trigger long-lasting post-infectious IBS — so the two aren't always separate.
The useful test: if your bloating clearly tracks with certain foods, diet and IBS are the more likely story. If it came on after water or travel and comes with diarrhea that won't quit, that's when a stool test for a parasite makes sense.
See a doctor for bloating that's persistent, painful, or comes with weight loss, blood, or vomiting — those deserve a proper look regardless of the cause. And please don't reach for a "parasite cleanse" — here's why. This page is general education, not a diagnosis.
